Yo-Yo Ma and David Zinman at Tanglewood
Tanglewood—one of the world’s premier music festivals and the famed summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937—welcomes Dartmouth alumni and friends.
Tanglewood—one of the world’s premier music festivals and the famed summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937—welcomes Dartmouth alumni and friends to a special afternoon performance featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi, the orchestra will perform Mozart’s Symphony No. 25 and Shumann’s Cello Concerto and Symphony No. 2.
Before the performance, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch in the Formal Gardens Tent on the Tanglewood Lawn and a talk with Steve Swayne, the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music. Professor Swayne will provide a thought-provoking commentary on the works of the performance. Youth and maturity, like beauty, are often in the eye of the beholder. Professor Swayne will lead you on a journey through a symphony written by the 17-year-old Mozart and two works written by Robert Schumann in his late thirties. Given that neither man lived a particularly long life—Mozart died at 36, and Schumann died at 46—their compositions often encompass both the naïveté that is a hallmark of youth and the wisdom that comes from age. Swayne will demonstrate elements of both these strands, youth and maturity, in the beautiful music you’ll hear emanating from the stage of Tanglewood’s Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed.
