James Broughton, Androgynous Poet 1946-1976

Robert Haller will discuss the joyous landmark films of experimental filmmaker, poet and playwright James Broughton via a 2010 interview recorded by Stephen Silha and Eric Slade for Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton. The in-depth discussion covers Haller’s professional relationship with Broughton and Broughton’s place as the poet who helped bring cinema censorship to an end with the popular success of his freewheeling romp The Bed (1968). Haller immortalized Broughton’s image in a photograph of Broughton filming Erogeny, a film Haller produced at Pittsburgh Film-Makers in 1976.

BIO: James Broughton (1919-1999) was a member of the San Francisco Renaissance and Radical Faeries. In his poems and films, he used accessible language and sly humor to explore themes of sexuality, mysticism and a personal mythology, often borrowing structurally from nursery rhymes and children’s songs. Broughton made more than twenty experimental films with honors bestowed by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and American Film Institute Award for Independent Film and Video Artists.

BIO: Robert Haller (1942-2021) was a major figure of the American avant-garde film scene and served for decades as the Director of Special Projects and Library Collections at Anthology Film Archives, New York. He wrote numerous books, catalogues and program notes on films and about filmmakers, such as Fritz Lang, Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger, Jim Davis, Amy Greenfield, Pittsburgh filmmakers and many more. His photographs of avant-garde filmmakers provide an invaluable record dating from 1970 to present.
