Group work has been shown to support deep learning, long-term retention, and a greater sense of purpose and relatedness for students––if groups are formed thoughtfully and given clear parameters. Dartmouth faculty who used group work in their remote classes last year found that these benefits persisted, despite group interactions taking place via Zoom or in Canvas by necessity. These findings indicate that group work is a resilient teaching strategy, supporting meaningful learning for students while being adaptable to various modes and methods. In this session, we will discuss the factors that support successful group work and explore how to design group interactions for flexibility in the face of potential disruption. Participants will also consider the Team Formation Tool, a Canvas app developed at Dartmouth, that uses student surveys for the creation of optimized student groups.
