Illustrator/professor Pascal Lemaitre and dancer/choreographer Emmanuèle Phuon invite participants to observe, move and trace the shape and presence of trees. Experience what it is like to be a tree—trunk rooted into the earth, reaching and spiraling up towards the sky, branches trembling and swaying in the wind. Transpose this reflection onto paper with lines and words: bent-over body circling large sheets of paper placed on the ground, the brush an extension of the arm. Rhythm following the breath of the line. We explore other ways of writing and tracing in the spirit of the artists of the CoBrA movement Christian Dotremont, Pierre Alechinsky or the poet Henri Michaux who themselves took inspiration in Japanese calligraphy. This workshop is an extension of We, a performance by Emily Coates and Emmanuèle Phuon.
