Dartmouth's Course Design Institute (CDI) introduces an integrated course design process that promotes student-centered teaching and learning. This process can be used to develop a new course or redesign an existing course.

During CDI, you will:

  • Apply evidence-based principles of learning to the design of a course
  • Write course learning outcomes and learning outcomes for at least one course unit
  • Create an assessment plan for formative and summative aspects of the course
  • Consider learning activities and assignments that address the course objectives.

CDI follows a flipped format, in which you work through asynchronous content (short videos, readings, exercises) in Canvas independently before attending live sessions.

The CDI asynchronous content is available to all Dartmouth users for self-study, regardless of participation in the live institute. You may enroll in the CDI Canvas course at any time to begin exploring. The estimated time for completing the asynchronous content is 3-4 hours. Instructors of non-academic courses and trainings are encouraged to pursue the self-study option.

Instructors teaching curricular academic courses at Dartmouth are invited to apply to participate in the live institute by completing the form linked below. During the live sessions, you will practice applying concepts from the asynchronous content to your own course design with guidance from CDI facilitators and support from a cohort of peers. Each live institute is limited to 15 participants. Priority consideration will be given to applicants whose courses will run soonest.

Live sessions will take place Dec. 6-7, 2022 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm in DCAL. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, 2022 at 11:59 pm. Applicants will be notified of acceptance decisions within one week of the application deadline.

Apply to the December 2022 Live Institute
