When Big Corporations turn Tiktok into management: Real time speech discrimination tools and the workplace

What happens when the same algorithmic tools that allow Tiktok to give you a personalized feed are used to serve up a personalized wage at your day job? In this talk, Professor Zephyr Teachout will break down the five forms of algorithmic wage-setting that are being introduced into workplaces  (productivity-based wage adjustments, wages shifted through incentive bonuses and demerits, behavioral wages, dynamic wages, wages shifted to conduct an experiment). She will show how each, separately and together, pose a threat to free speech and free thought in contemporary society, and argues that we need to create guidelines so that we can maintain our autonomy--and democracy
