Director Ridley Scott returns to ancient Rome with his epic saga of power and vengeance starring Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. Seeking revenge against the general (Pedro Pascal) who took everything from him, Lucius must summon his strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.
Noting these themes, this sequel might almost be confused for a reboot of the original, were it not for Denzel Washington's mesmerizing performance. The veteran actor oozes sly charisma as the chief promoter for the fights, pulling political strings behind the scenes. Director Ridley Scott's old-school sand-and-sandals flick with an all-star cast (including Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi from the original) delivers on every level. Are we not entertained? Yes. Yes, we are.
