Optical imaging systems play a crucial role in clinical care, enhancing vision and providing essential insights for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The future of this technology lies in real-time, minimally invasive diagnostics and treatment guidance. Building on advancements from the Optics in Medicine lab at Thayer, this talk will introduce recent innovations in optical cancer detection and therapy guidance in radiotherapy and surgical cancer care, with a focus on the path toward initial clinical trials. Through first-hand real-world examples, we will explore how innovative biochemical and physical principles can be translated into practical, reliable devices for complex healthcare settings. This presentation aims to inspire new perspectives on engineering optical sensors and integrated systems to meet critical clinical needs and enable novel therapies.
