Designing Authentic Assessments in the Age of AI
In this two-part workshop, participants will learn, discuss, and design an authentic assignment that promotes engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful learning.
Authentic assessments invite students to apply their learning to real-world problems, tasks, and scenarios. While quizzes, short-answer tests, and multiple-choice exams have their place, pairing them with more applied approaches can spark deeper engagement and provide richer evidence of learning. This two-session interactive workshop guides participants in designing authentic assessments with careful attention to alignment between learning outcomes, assignment instructions, and evaluation criteria. In the first session (Monday, Oct 13, 1pm-2pm), participants will explore models of authentic assessment and begin redesigning an existing assignment or drafting a new one through the lens of real-world application. Between sessions, participants will have access to a Canvas site with resources to continue developing their assignments. Learning designers will be available for 1:1 consultation if needed. In the second session (Friday, Oct 17, 1pm-2pm), participants will share their revised or newly created assignments and engage in peer feedback.
Participants in this workshop will:
- Explore models of authentic assessment across disciplines.
- Begin drafting or redesigning an assignment with real-world application in mind.
- Refine their assignment between sessions, with support from learning designers as needed.
- Share and receive supportive peer feedback in a collaborative session.
By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with an authentic assignment that fosters student engagement, critical thinking, and meaningful learning. Register for this two-part workshop.
Please note: To make the most of this workshop, you should plan on attending both dates (Mon, Oct 13 and Fri, Oct 17) at 1-2 PM ET. You only have to sign up once. We will send you calendar invites for both dates.
