Cornelia Purcell, MALS ’96, associate director, Dartmouth College Fund

On the job: Cornelia Purcell, MALS ’96, of Hanover, has been in Development for nearly 20 years and is the primary annual giving contact for the Classes of 1980, ’82, ’86, ’89, ’90, and ’97. The Dartmouth College Fund, along with the annual funds of the professional schools, contributed more than $270 million in unrestricted gifts to the recently completed Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience’s $1.3 billion goal.

Engagement: Purcell thinks of her work with the College’s annual fund as “celebrating and assisting volunteers. I encourage the alumni classes I work with to stay engaged with Dartmouth.” Purcell is bringing innovative technology to that work, arranging a new town meeting-style video conference with President Jim Yong Kim and the Class of 1980.

Continuing education: Purcell’s own Dartmouth experience includes earning a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) from the College. Her MALS thesis was a study of German citizenship law with Professor Michael Ermarth.

Community: Purcell and her husband have volunteered as ski coaches with the Ford K. Sayre ski program for as long as she has lived in the Upper Valley. She also serves on the board of the Carter Community Building Association (CCBA) in Lebanon, and coordinates the capital campaign for the Kilton Library under construction in West Lebanon. “I think of myself as a citizen of the entire Upper Valley. We’re all one place, together,” she says.
