A new exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Soo Sunny Park, assistant professor of studio art at Dartmouth College, opens in the Jaffre-Friede Gallery in the Hopkins Center on Tuesday, November 9. Park will deliver a lecture about her work that afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Loew Auditorium, followed by the opening reception in Jaffe-Friede Gallery. The exhibit runs through December 5.

“There’s a traditional idea of what sculpture is, and I try to stretch that definition,” says the South Korean-born artist, who often fabricates her pieces out of building materials, such as a large sculpture made from a metal lathe. “The whole idea of installations is to engage the viewer’s body; moving around in space is part of experiencing the work.”

Park, who has been teaching at Dartmouth since 2005, received her BFA in painting and sculpture from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, and an MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. After a residency in Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, she worked as an installation artist and lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. In 2001, she was awarded with the River Front Times’ “Best of 2001, Sculptor of St. Louis.” Park is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell MFA Grant, and grand prize winner of the 19th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition, Cité Internationale des Arts Studio Residency, Paris, France.
