Judd A. Gregg has served as a U.S. senator and congressman from New Hampshire and as the state’s governor, dedicating more than three decades of his life to public service.He was born in Nashua, N.H., where he attended public schools. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, in Exeter, N.H., in 1965, and earned an AB degree from Columbia University in 1969, a JD from Boston University in 1972, and an LLM in 1975, also from BU.

Gregg was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1972 and set up legal practice in in Nashua. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1974, and a member of the New Hampshire Governor’s Executive Council from 1978 to 1980. He was elected as a Republican to the 97th (and three succeeding) Congresses. He served from January 3, 1981, to January 3, 1989.

He was elected governor of New Hampshire for two terms, beginning January 5, 1989, and then was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, and reelected in 1998 and 2004. He chose not to run for reelection in 2010.

Gregg served in the Senate from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2011. He also served as chair of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and the Committee on the Budget.
