Two Composers, Honored Silently (The New York Times)

Amid the revelry surrounding big anniversaries of classical music luminaries in recent years, Professor of Music Steve Swayne says that two formative American composers have been overlooked: Samuel Barber and William Schuman, who were both born in 1910.

“Both composers aimed for the heart...which is where they held each other and each other’s music,” says Swayne in his piece celebrating the two men. “America’s best composers merit more than a passing nod on their anniversaries or a story about their disappearance from the concert hall.”
