Thrope clearly thinks highly of the area’s hiking (“Would-be backpackers craving a bit of rugged landscape could hardly do better than New Hampshire’s White Mountains.”), but he calls this section of the Appalachian Trail, which passes through Hanover, “especially beautiful.”
