Study spots distortion of Social Security goal (Chicago Tribune)

Alan Gustman, the Loren M. Berry Professor of Economics, recently co-authored a study that found Social Security may not be redistributing funds the way it was intended.

Wage differences between spouses are muddling the system, Gustman told the Chicago Tribune. Much of the money intended to go from wealthy families to lower-income families is instead going from wealthy husbands to their lower-income wives, he said.

Nahid Tabatabai, an economics research associate at Dartmouth, also worked on the study, which was funded by the Social Security Administration.
