“Each year,” says Michael Mastanduno, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Professor of Government, “our new colleagues enrich and enliven the Dartmouth community. Their leading-edge research, their commitment to their students, and their willingness to collaborate with colleagues both in their departments and across disciplinary boundaries keep Dartmouth moving forward.”
The Tuck School of Business and Dartmouth Medical School (DMS) welcomed new tenured and tenure-track faculty as well.
Dartmouth Medicine magazine traces the start of a researcher’s career, profiling Farran Briggs ’97, assistant professor of physiology. Also joining the DMS faculty are Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and of Community and Family Medicine Brock Christensen, Assistant Professor of Community and Family Medicine Jennifer A. Doherty, Assistant Professor of Physiology Bryan W. Luikart, and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology and of Community and Family Medicine Carmen Marsit.
Briggs is one of three faculty members returning as researchers and teachers to their alma mater, including Alan Covey ’96, associate professor of anthropology, and Jason Stauth, Thayer ’00, assistant professor of engineering.
Stauth joined Thayer School’s faculty alongside Associate Professor of Engineering Ulirke Wegst. Dartmouth Engineer magazine profiles Stuath and West in its Winter 2012 issue.
Tuck welcomed Emily Blanchard and Richard Townsend, both as assistant professors of business administration. Townsend is also the Daniel T. Revers Tuck ’89 Faculty Fellow.
As Dartmouth’s newest scholars have begun connecting with colleagues, students, administrators and staff, they have been struck by the distinctiveness of the Dartmouth experience.
Ryan Hickox, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, whose research on the formation of galaxies already draws international attention, tells this story: “I was at the Dartmouth Skiway recently and happened to get on the lift with a student. We spent the lift ride having a really interesting discussion about astronomy and engineering. The connection of Dartmouth’s intellectual community with the outdoors is an amazing part of life here.”
Sung Lim Kim, assistant professor of art history and of Asian and Middle Eastern studies, notes, “the close relationship between students and professors in class and outside of class is outstanding at Dartmouth. Going through a large state university system, I never had casual and close relationships with my professors as an undergraduate. At Dartmouth, I have been invited to lunch with students, and we have many personal and academic conversations in casual settings, outside of class and office.”
Irma Mayorga, assistant professor of theater, recalls the note of global outlook and focus on service evident from the opening of Dartmouth’s academic year, when Kul Chandra Gautam ’72, former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations and deputy executive director of UNICEF, addressed the gathered community at Convocation.
Mayorga says, “I was especially struck by the story of his first moments as a Dartmouth student—how for him, coming from a very remote village in Nepal, Dartmouth was an elite apex, near the center of everything. … But the most important idea that I took away was his instruction to remember that ‘what you see depends on where you stand.’”
Her view of Dartmouth, Mayorga says, will always be framed by Gautam’s plea to remember the privileged position Dartmouth holds in the world, and the responsibility that comes with it. Each day this week, Dartmouth Now will profile one of these newest members of the Dartmouth faculty.
