On April 10, Emily Unger ’11 departed Dartmouth for the journey of a lifetime. Her trip, sponsored by the Dickey Center for International Understanding, will take her around the world, from Shanghai, to Delhi, to Hyderabad, to Paris, to Lyon, to Lima, to Cusco, and then back to Hanover on June 3.

Unger is capturing the experiences of Dartmouth students and alumni around the world. Her photographs, video, and writing are chronicled on her blog, “Round the Girdled Earth I Roam.”

In her first entry, Unger explains the mission of the trip. “Dartmouth sends hundreds of students abroad every year and my job is to go and find some of them to tell their stories,” she explains. “What is their impact on the place they are visiting and what is its impact on them? I hope to show the importance of these journeys and what they add to the education of a Dartmouth student, and to the world.”

“This trip is a unique opportunity for Emily to learn about the world through the experiences of her peers,” says Christianne Hardy Wohlforth, acting director of the Dickey Center for International Understanding. “It also gives those students she is connecting with an opportunity to reflect upon and share their experiences as they are happening, and this I believe will enrich their own learning.”

While she was an undergraduate, Unger traveled to Ecuador to work with a mobile surgical team, to rural Ghana (as a Dickey International Intern) to volunteer in a maternity ward, and to Costa Rica and the Cayman Islands with the Biology Foreign Study Program. “Emily is an amazing photographer and a natural adventurer,” says Amy Newcomb, the student programs officer for the Dickey Center for International Understanding. “She understands what our programs are about and how they compliment a Dartmouth academic experience.”

Unger is scheduled to visit five Dickey International Interns, two post-graduate fellows from the Lombard Fellowship and James B. Reynolds Scholarships for Foreign Study, as well as students involved in the French Language Study Abroad and Foreign Study Programs in France. She will also connect with Dartmouth alumni, students, and prospective students throughout her journey with stops at alumni groups in Shanghai, China; Mumbai, India; and Paris, France.
