An exhibition entitled “The Steins Collect,” currently on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, recently drew criticism for not including a reference to Gertrude Stein’s relationships with Nazi sympathizers during World War II.

“Suppressing Ugly Truth for Beautiful Art” , published May 1 by the Huffington Post, points to the work of Barbara Will, professor of English, for a historical context of Gertrude Stein’s political affiliations. Will is the author of Unlikely Collaboration: Gertrude Stein, Bernard Fay and the Vichy Dilemma. The book includes historical details about Stein’s relationship with Nazi leaders and sympathizers.

The New York Times reports that, in a response to the criticisms, the museum will amend the text for the “The Steins Collect” to acknowledge Stein’s political affiliations with the Nazi regime and will also direct patrons to consider Will’s book.
