On the move: To say that this is a busy time of year for Jim Alberghini is an understatement.  As the manager of conferences and events, Alberghini is the behind-the-scenes coordinator for both Commencement and Reunions.  “For me,” Alberghini says, “the two are intertwined as one 10-day event.” Alberghini, who began working on the details for Commencement and Reunions in January, documents thousands of details relating to Hanover officials, Facilities Operations and Management (FO&M), Dartmouth Dining Services, the President’s Office, student organizations, vendors, and many more, in order to ensure that every event runs smoothly.  “Every aspect of culminating events, Commencement, and 11 reunions get noted in a 130-page work order book I create,” says Alberghini.  Among the many details Alberghini coordinates are:

  • Setting up the Green for Commencement
  • Obtaining town permits for every outdoor activity
  • Delivering, setting up, and maintaining 28 tents
  • Setting up over 130 receptions and meals
  • Delivering over 700 lbs. of ice.
While it is a hectic time of year for Alberghini, he still finds time to step back and enjoy the events.  “When planning,” Alberghini says, “I imagine each aspect of Commencement in my mind, considering how all the moving parts and people need to interact. I love to see it all become reality. During Reunions week, I love riding my bike around campus with my cell phone and radio, troubleshooting and chatting with FO&M crew, alumni, and their guests.”

On campus: Alberghini began working at Dartmouth in 2004 as the production manager for the Hopkins Center.  In 2009, he moved into his current role in conferences and events.  “I think the best thing about Dartmouth is the people. Most everyone—staff, students and faculty—are passionate about what they do. I enjoy being in an environment where the people around me challenge me to do my best.”

At home: It’s no surprise that Alberghini’s life away from Dartmouth is as action-backed as his daily life at the College. If he’s not joining a bike group for a ride to Lyme on a Friday afternoon, he might be found taking a dip in a local swimming hole, or running through Pine Park along the golf course. Family and friends are also a priority for Alberghini. “I love to cook and enjoy potlucks with friends and love watching my two teenage daughters grow up.”
