It may be only two weeks into the new year, but Abbey D’Agostino ’14, a member of the Dartmouth women’s track and field team, is making her mark on 2013.

Her 4:34.15 (converted to 4:31.46) in the mile on January 13 at the Dartmouth Relays not only set a new program and meet record, but is also the fastest time in the world in the event this year, as reported by Track and Field News on January 15.

D’Agostino eclipsed her own previous school record of 4:38.44, set at last year’s Dartmouth Relays. “Her time is extremely fast for a flat 200-meter track,” says assistant track and field coach Mark Coogan. “It is the fastest mile on a flat 200 for an NCAA athlete in a few years, and I believe that Abbey will continue to improve this year."

D’Agostino’s time is converted to 4:31.46 due to the track size inside Dartmouth’s Leverone Field House for collegiate scoring purposes. Her converted time is nearly 11 seconds better than the next-fastest finish by a collegiate runner this season.

In November, D’Agostino took home All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship as she finished second overall in the 6K event. At last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships, she won the national championship in the 5,000 meters.
