Editors for the Internet forum Big Think write about theories on the boundaries of human knowledge, posing the question of whether people can ever know “all there is to know,” and take note of the work of Dartmouth’s Marcelo Gleiser, the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and professor of physics and astronomy. “The more we learn, the more it pushes the boundaries of what we don’t know,” Big Think writes.

Big Think editors go on to say that Gleiser “describes this problem by using the metaphor of an island. Knowledge is an island. As this island grows, Gleiser says, the border of what we do not know also grows. So the history of knowledge will always be incomplete.”
