Some of this week’s Winter Carnival events have been canceled, jeopardized, or moved to different locations due to the recent lack of snow in the area.
Although Winter Storm Nemo is approaching New England and predictions indicate that up to two feet of snow may fall in the coming days, it will be too late for some of this year’s Winter Carnival events, scheduled for February 7 through 10.
“The snow will be one day too late for some events,” says Eric Ramsey, director of the Collis Center for Student Involvement, which coordinates Winter Carnival.
Nordic ski races have been moved north from Oak Hill in Hanover to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury, Vt. The events will start at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 8, and 10 a.m. on Saturday. For a full schedule of events, visit the Dartmouth Ski Team website.
The campus-wide Snow Sculpture Contest, which was planned to take place Thursday and Friday, has been canceled.
Thursday’s Carni Classic, a 3-kilometer student ski race on the golf course, has also been canceled, according to Ramsey.
Saturday’s Human Dogsled Race at the Green is in jeopardy, and whether the event will be held will be determined on Saturday, says Ramsey.
Currently, multiple sources are predicting that Winter Storm Nemo will produce up to two feet of snow in the area. A winter storm watch is in effect for Hanover from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
