Colleen Glenney Boggs, associate professor of English and of women’s and gender studies, writes in an opinion piece in The Guardian that those responsible for the shooting of Carol the elephant last week in Tupelo, Miss., should be “held accountable on the same terms that we would apply if they had shot a human being.”
The elephant, part of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, was shot in the shoulder and is expected to recover, she says.
Boggs, director of the Leslie Center for the Humanities, writes that the shooting was a workplace injury as well as a crime, since the elephant was a working member of the circus. “As victims of violence, such animals should have equal rights,” Boggs writes.
