Springtime brings plenty of sounds with it: from birds singing to thunder rumbling to the crack of a baseball bat. Next week, another sound will ring out from the lawn in front of Baker-Berry Library: classical music.
The Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble will host its 28th annual “Study Break Concert” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 30.
“This concert comprises a fun, lighter-fare repertoire easily enjoyed by audiences of any age,” says Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble Conductor and Director of Bands Matthew Marsit. “We strongly encourage students, staff, and faculty to drop in to enjoy an afternoon of music.”
Music featured in the concert includes work by Clifton Williams, Gustav Holst, Haydn Wood, and John Phillip Sousa.
The Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble consists of 50 auditioned members, including Dartmouth students and area residents. They perform three times a year in Spaulding Auditorium, as well as special performances like the Study Break Concert. To date, they have recorded 14 CDs.
The concert, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Office of the President.
Interim President Carol Folt, who will soon become chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be at the concert and students may take this opportunity to visit with her.
Following the concert, there will be a reception with light refreshments.
In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Hopkins Center for the Art’s Moore Theater with the reception in the Top of the Hop.
