Kyle Hendricks ’12, picked last year as the Chicago Cubs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, can discuss economics with a level of expertise that’s rare among his fellow ballplayers, writes the sports website MiLB.com.

The explanation, notes the website: While playing pro ball, Hendricks managed to earn a degree in economics from Dartmouth. Before turning pro in 2011, the former Big Green star pitcher helped Dartmouth win back-to-back Ivy League titles in 2009 and 2010

“Academics are important to me, but baseball has always been what I wanted to do,” Hendricks tells MiLB. com. Dartmouth Head Baseball Coach Bob Whalen knew that, Hendricks says, “and when I got drafted, he was fully supportive. But I had to promise not only him but my mom, too, that I would come back and graduate. It was important to me, but they made me promise.”
