Gillian Apps ’06 is one of the longest-serving members of the Canadian women’s ice hockey team, and is competing for her third Olympic gold medal in Sochi. As she tells the Toronto Star in this video interview, her Olympic aspirations were first fueled while watching a cousin win a rowing gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games.

Apps says she quickly ruled out the Summer Games because she wasn’t “really talented at any of the Olympic summer sports.” But with hockey, she says, “I really fell in love with the game.”

And after watching the first Olympic women’s hockey competition in 1998, she thought “it would be awesome if I had a chance to do that.”
