“The New Medical Frontier” is the theme of this year’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Dartmouth summer lecture series. Over six weeks, physicians, researchers, and health care leaders will explore the future of medicine, from the accessibility and quality of patient care to the advent of technologies that are transforming approaches to treatment and prevention.

The series begins July 13 with an overview of “The Big Picture” with Rodney Hochman, president and CEO of Providence Health & Services, the fourth largest not-for-profit health system in the country.

Lectures continue Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11:30 through Aug. 17 in Spaulding Auditorium at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

The schedule:

  • July 13, Rodney Hochman, president and CEO of Providence Health & Services, will speak on “The Big Picture.”
  • July 20, Eric D. Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, will speak on “Human Genomics, Precision Medicine, and Advancing Human Health.”
  • July 27, Mark A. Creager, a professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine and director of the Heart and Vascular Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, will discuss “New Drugs and Innovative Technologies to Prevent and Treat Cardiovascular Disease.”
  • Aug. 3, Scott Grafton, a behavioral neuroscientist and the Bedrosian Coyne Presidential Chair in Neuroscience at University of California, Santa Barbara, will talk about “The Brain.”
  • Aug. 10, John Lawrence ’76, DMS ’79, a pediatric surgeon at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and vice president of the board of directors of Doctors Without Borders-USA, will discuss the “International Frontier.”
  • Aug. 17, James Weinstein, president and CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, will be joined by D-H colleagues Rob Greene, executive vice president and chief population health management officer; Vin Fusca, vice president of the D-H ImagineCare program; and Sarah Pletcher, medical director of D-H’s TeleHealth program. The panel will discuss “Bringing It Home.”
