With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Mark Williams, an associate professor of film and media studies, discusses the defining characteristics of romantic comedies and how the genre has evolved.

“They are definitely an index of how the society is in a position to entertain difference in relationship to romantic coupling and the rules that society has put into place,” says Williams. “That means it’s a genre that’s right for a lot of different kinds of experimentation.”
