The professor discusses the security risks of last year’s SolarWinds attack.

At the end of 2020, a hacker group gained access to the computer systems of multiple U.S. government departments by attacking a software company called SolarWinds. V.S. Subrahmanian, the Distinguished Professor in Cybersecurity, Technology, and Society, discusses the SolarWinds attack and the impact of cyber hacks on national security.

“Hacks are primarily carried out by leveraging vulnerabilities in software or hardware systems,” says Subrahmanian. “What this means is that we, as a nation, need to think about how we manage vulnerabilities much more carefully and thoughtfully.”
