A memorial service will be held in honor of President Emeritus James Wright on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in Alumni Hall.

A reception at the Hanover Inn will follow the service. The memorial service will be both in person and livestreamed.

Wright came to Dartmouth as a history professor in 1969 and served as its 16th president from 1998 to 2009. He died on Oct. 10 at his Hanover home at 83.

His accomplishments have attracted national attention.

In a news obituary published Sunday, the Boston Globe called him a “champion of diversity.”

And former trustee David Shribman ’76, a Pulitzer Prize winner who is now a syndicated columnist, wrote of his longstanding friendship with Wright, which started in a Dartmouth classroom.

“He was the guiding light to generations of Dartmouth College students who flocked to his courses (almost always oversubscribed), who flunked his courses (there were more than a few), and whose lives and interests (some of them landed on Capitol Hill) were fostered by his courses,” Shribman wrote.

In lieu of flowers, donations in President Emeritus Wright’s memory may be made to Dartmouth College, to be directed to the James Wright Memorial Fund. This fund will create a meaningful tribute to President Emeritus Wright in consultation with his family.

Contributions by check may be made payable to “Trustees of Dartmouth College” and mailed to: Gift Recording Office, c/o Erin Bennett, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755-4400. Please include in the memo on your check “James Wright Memorial Fund.”
