Dartmouth has launched a search for the second dean of the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies—the university’s central home for graduate education, doctoral programs, research training, and postdoctoral affairs.
“We seek a distinguished scholar and experienced academic leader with a record of excellence in research, teaching, and mentorship,” Provost Santiago Schnell said in a community message announcing the search. “This is a significant opportunity to shape the future of graduate and advanced education at Dartmouth.”
The next dean will be called on to set Guarini’s strategic direction, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and support “a vibrant and inclusive academic community,” Schnell said. Candidates should possess demonstrated leadership experience and be committed to supporting graduate and postdoctoral communities, according to the job description.
Schnell thanked Guarini’s inaugural dean, Jon Kull ’88, for his “meaningful and lasting impact on the institution” over the past 14 years.
Kull, a structural biologist and the Rodgers Professor of Chemistry, was appointed dean of the then-Office of Graduate Studies in 2012 and oversaw its transition to the School of Graduate and Advanced Studies in 2016.

He has continued to guide its growth since it was named in 2018 in honor of Frank J. Guarini ’46, a former New Jersey congressman and U.S. representative to the United Nations. Last year Kull extended his tenure as dean through June 2026.
A search committee, chaired by Hodgson Distinguished Professor of Engineering Klaus Keller, will work to identify candidates for the next dean. Nominations, expressions of interest, and questions may be directed to the Office.of.the.Provost@dartmouth.edu.
