A number of events will highlight Earth Week at Dartmouth this year, including a pop-up thrift shop, a special edition of Thursday Night Trivia, and a panel discussion about sustainability efforts on campus.

Director of Sustainability Rosi Kerr ’98 says organizers aim to reach a wider audience each year.

From the thrift shop to the panel discussion to an outdoor event at the Organic Farm, Earth Week 2022 features a range of activities, Kerr says.

“The idea is to engage people in areas of interest to them, and to give people opportunities to positively interact with sustainability.”

Kerr says she hopes participants will come away with increased knowledge about Dartmouth’s move toward greater sustainability, and the people involved with that work.

“There’s a lot of effort going into our sustainability work at present, and I think it’s often behind the scenes,” Kerr says. “Earth Week is an opportunity for us to really raise that up.”

Here are some highlights from the 2022 schedule:

Monday, April 18

Sustainable Thrift Shop, 5 to 8 p.m., Collis Common Ground. Refresh your spring wardrobe at the pop-up shop presented by the Sustainability Office.

Tuesday, April 19

“50 Years of Energy Policy—Lessons for the Future,” 12:15 p.m., Irving Institute (IR-080), and livestreamed. The lecture with John Deutch, emeritus Institute Professor at MIT and former director of the CIA, is part of the Dartmouth Energy Collaborative’s “Energy Seminar” series and Thayer School of Engineering’s “Great Issues in Energy” series.

Wednesday, April 20

Carbon Plates: The Carbon Footprint of Food, noon to 2 p.m., the Class of 1953 Commons. Learn about the environmental impacts of food systems.

Sustainability Corps Info Session, 1 to 3 p.m., Collis Porch. Sustainability Corps interns discuss energy and waste management at Dartmouth.

Thursday, April 21

Trivia Night, 9 p.m., One Wheelock in Collis Center. Participants will have the chance to win swag and House Cup points at this special edition of Thursday Night Trivia, sponsored by Collis Center, the Interhouse Council, and the Sustainability Office.

Friday, April 22

Geisel Earth Day Celebration, 2 to 4 p.m., Dartmouth Organic Farm. Healthy smoothies, yoga, and information about local organizations are all on the menu.

Earth Week Forum with Dartmouth Administration, 3:45 p.m., Irving Institute and online. Provost David Kotz ’86, Executive Vice President Rick Mills, and Vice President of Campus Services Josh Keniston discuss the institution’s progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the opportunities and challenges Dartmouth faces as it moves toward greater sustainability.
