Professor Vosoughi will give a talk titled "Large Language Models and Persuasive Language." In the talk, he will explain the research conducted inhis lab on the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) such as GPT to understand, generate, and be influenced by persuasive language. Persuasive language is critical to human communication, from marketing and politics to everyday interpersonal interactions. LLMs that can process and produce persuasive language have immense applications, such as developing more effective dialogue systems, creating content tailored to specific audiences, or aiding educational tools. Moreover, understanding the mechanisms by which LLMs can be swayed or can sway opinions is crucial for ethical AI development, helping to prevent the spread of misinformation or manipulation.  This area of research can highlight and possibly counteract harmful persuasive tactics used in social media and other platforms.
