Talk description: Despite the well-known benefits of physical activity, individuals with disabilities continue to be less active then their abled-bodied counterparts. They often face challenges related to the physical and social environment that limit their opportunities to take part in physical activities that are meaningful for them. Offering adaptive physical activity in the communities where people live, represent a great way to support people with disabilities to be active. This presentation will focus on the benefits of community-based physical activity as well as the strategies that better support meaningful and impactful participation for the health and well-being of people with disabilities.

Bio: Dr Labbé is an assistant professor in the department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed her PhD in Community Psychology at the Université du Québec in Montreal and then was a postdoctoral fellow in Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of British Columbia. Her research is focusing on the social determinants of health that lead to health disparities for individuals living with disabilities and on ways to address these to co-create healthier communities.
