“Hanover and the Hot War: Fragmented Korean War narratives at Dartmouth College in the 1950s”

Research by Rachel Kahng '25, the Summer 2024 Historical Accountability Student Research Fellow, examines the discourse surrounding the Korean War at Dartmouth College, emphasizing student perspectives within the "Cold War university" context including that of a veteran student from California and a Korean international student. How Dartmouth students responded to the war are revealed through an analysis of the themes that dominated campus discussion such as citizenship, democracy, and public responsibility — which are intertwined with American notions of racial identity and experiences of WWII. The Korean War not only expanded but also crystalised the university's role, ultimately shaping individual experiences based on how one fit into its ideals as the intersection of academia and U.S. policy in the 1950s.

Attend in person in Berry 180A (The LINK) or via Zoom.
