Helena Rosenblatt: Liberalism, Past and Present
What is liberalism, where did it come from, and how can its history help us chart our way forward today? Rosenblatt reflects on the tangled history of attempts at a liberal order.
At a time when the Tea Party movement, Occupy Wall Street, Brexit, Trump, Sanders, populism of Left and Right, and the new assertiveness of the great illiberal empires of historic Eurasia has put “liberalism” on its back foot, Rosenblatt will discuss her acclaimed recent book The Lost History of Liberalism. What is “liberalism,” where did it come from, and how can a better understanding of its history help us chart our way forward today?
Recent recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Rosenblatt is the author of important works on Rousseau, Constant and the broader history of liberalism. She teaches in the Ph.D. programs in History, French, and Political Science at City University of New York.
