This lecture takes up the work of contemporary artist, Hardeep Pandhal. His artworks investigate the significance of Punjabi traditions in the context of South Asian disaporic experiences in Britain. Working across animation, installations, cut outs, and drawings, Pandhal’s work explores the reinvention of tradition in light of racial diasporic histories, destructive internet cultures, and immigrant nostalgia.
Dr. Zahid R. Chaudhary is an Associate Professor of English at Princeton University. His research and teaching focus on postcolonial studies, visual culture, and critical theory. Dr. Chaudhary’s first book, Afterimage of Empire: Photography in Nineteenth-Century India (2012), provides a historical and philosophical account of early photography in India, analyzing how aesthetic experiments in colonial photographic practice shed light on the changing nature of perception and notions of truth, memory, and embodiment. Dr. Chaudhary’s articles have appeared in differences, Boundary 2, October, Social Text, Cultural Critique, South Asia, and Camera Obscura.
