In Freedom from Fear: An Incomplete History of Liberalism (forthcoming Princeton, 2023), distinguished intellectual historian Alan Kahan (Université de Versailles, Saint-Quentin) shows how throughout modern times, liberalism has been both a response to fear and a source of hope: a continual search for a world in which no one need be afraid. His new book explores how liberals have dealt with a range of crucial issues, from debates over male and female suffrage to colonialism and liberal anti-Catholicism, among many others, and suggests ways it may respond to the challenges of today.
