Film Screening: The Jujutsu of Human Relations
Followed by discussion with director Prof. Junnan Chen (NYU Shanghai) & Prof. Sachi Schmidt-Hori (Dartmouth College)
The Jujutsu of Human Relations follows Dartmouth professor Sachi Schmidt-Hori (ASCL), a scholar thrust into an unexpected public storm after serving as a narrative consultant for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, the latest installment of the globally popular franchise by Ubisoft. When the video game’s cinematic trailer is released, it ignites a wave of online controversy that rapidly escalates into targeted harassment and death threats against her. Set against the everyday rhythms of her teaching life during the LSA+ Osaka in 2024, the film traces Sachi’s navigation through a complex web of politics and cultures shaped by global media. Ultimately, it reflects on the fragility of identity discourse and, most importantly, friendship.
Sponsored by the Office of Associate Dean Matt Delmont, the Dickey Center, the Leslie Center, the Wright Center, and the Department of Asian Societies, Cultures and Languages (ASCL).
