Written in 1923, Ernest Bloch's first Piano Quintet was driven by a vision that's grim, mystical and ultimately redemptive. Grażyna Bacewicz's Piano Quintet juxtaposes Neo-Romantic serenity with Polish folk elements. Winston Marsalis' 1st String Quartet of 1995, 'At the Octoroon Balls', takes you to New Orleans, to the contradictions and compromises of the American Creole.
