New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will deliver the inaugural Dartmouth Presidential Lecture from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Friday, July 16, 2010, in the Moore Theater of the Hopkins Center for the Arts.
“Our goal with the Presidential Lecture Series is to supplement the classroom experience with real-life lessons on innovation, collaboration, and leadership,” said Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim. President Kim will deliver the second lecture in the series on Thursday, July 29, on the “habits of the mind” that are key to success.
In the inaugural lecture, Mayor Bloomberg will discuss his experiences in government, philanthropy, and business. Now in his third term as mayor of New York, he has become a leading independent voice on national issues including financial regulation, climate change, education, national security, firearms policy, and immigration. In New York, Bloomberg gained attention for taking control of the city’s schools, a move many have credited with boosting the four-year high school graduation rate by over 18 percent. In 2003, he enacted one of the country’s most extensive smoking bans. He founded Bloomberg L.P., the financial information company, in 1981.
“Mayor Bloomberg is the quintessential choice to open this lecture series,” said Bruce Sacerdote ’90, the Richard S. Braddock 1963 Professor in Economics. “So many issues of the day relate to New York, including national security, the financial meltdown, financial regulation, school reform, and the polarization of the American political system.” Sacerdote has been involved in planning the Presidential Lecture Series.
Seating is limited in the Moore Theater, and students will be given priority. Media must apply for credentials to attend the event. Doors open for Dartmouth students at 10:40 a.m. and for others at 11:00 a.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will be broadcast live on DarTV, a campus service that delivers broadcast television over Dartmouth’s data network, and will be videotaped and posted to the Dartmouth website.
