Donald Pease, the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities, will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Languages at Sweden’s Uppsala University. In 2008, Pease was invited to give a keynote lecture at Uppsala, which is the only university in Sweden to offer a PhD in American literature. “Dartmouth’s remarkable Arts and Humanities Division deserves much of the credit for this honor. The distinguished colleagues and students with whom I have had the privilege to work throughout my career as a scholar and teacher have inspired my work,” says Pease, who ranks the honorary degree, alongside the Dartmouth teaching award he received in 1981, as his most gratifying accolades. “Unlike other forms of academic recognition, these resulted from votes by the students and fellow scholars who have made academic life feel intrinsically honorable.” The honorary doctorate will be conferred on January 29, 2011 in a ceremony at Uppsala University. Uppsala and Dartmouth College are two of seven members of a global network of universities, the Matariki Network of Universities, formed in June 2010.
