Meet the 2011 Social Justice Award winners:
Michael K. DorseyOngoing Commitment HonoreeAssistant Professor of Environmental StudiesMichael K. Dorsey is the director of Dartmouth’s Climate Justice Research Project, a visiting scholar with the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies’ Climate Change Initiative, and co-founder and board member of Islands First, a multilateral negotiating-capacity-building organization for small island developing states facing disproportionate threats from unfolding climate change. Dorsey served on President Obama’s energy and environment Presidential campaign team; on the U.S. State Department Delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, known as the “Earth Summit”; on the task force for President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development; and, in 2010, was appointed to the EPA’s National Advisory Committee.
Gregorio Millett ’90Ongoing Commitment HonoreeSenior Scientist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of National AIDS Policy, The White HouseGregorio Millett ’90 serves as a senior scientist in the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is also the senior policy advisor in the Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) in the White House, where he coordinates the office’s policy and research activities, including HIV prevention policy. In addition, Millett is the staff lead for the HIV interagency working group that is tasked with developing the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including JAMA, AIDS, the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, and the American Journal of Public Health.
Holly Fell Sateia MALS ’82Lifetime AchievementVice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity, EmeritaFrom the beginning of her career in the Dartmouth Admissions Office in 1974, Sateia has remained consistently devoted to promoting diversity and inclusion at Dartmouth, serving as chair of the Diversity Committee, the Campus Climate Committee, and the Council on Diversity as well as aiding in the creation of Dartmouth’s Office of Pluralism and Leadership while Senior Associate Dean of the College. After becoming Dartmouth’s Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity in 2007, Saetia oversaw the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office, Diversity Training and Educational Programs, Bildner Endowment for Human and Intergroup Relations, among other programs.
Jan-Roberta Tarjan ’74The William Jewett Tucker Foundation Lester B. Granger ’18 Award for Lifetime AchievementSenior Program Officer for Local Service (retired), Dartmouth’s William Jewett Tucker FoundationTarjan began her career at Dartmouth in 1975 in the Admissions Office before transferring to the Tucker Foundation, where she directed numerous projects, including the Tucker Fellowships, Dartmouth Partners in Community Service Internships, and a Dartmouth-Peace Corps pilot internship that later became the nationwide Peace Corps and Campus Compact “Going Global” program. Tarjan also participated in the inaugural Project Preservation, which restores Jewish cemetries in Eastern Europe. She serves on the boards of numerous local nonprofit and professional organizations, including COVER Home Repair and the Upper Valley United Way.
Dartmouth Habitat for HumanityStudent Organization Honoree Dartmouth’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity collaborates with Upper Valley Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing for lower income families. The organization’s 2010 project, the “Big Green House,” represents the group’s increased commitment to environmental awareness and conscientiousness with its implementation of heat recovery ventilators, solar hot water, super insulation, photovoltaics, and a home energy monitor.
