According to Associate Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences Paul Whalen and his co-author, how a deep brain structure called the amygdala responds to the facial cues predicts both normal and abnormal emotional states. Understanding the brain chemistry of these responses will lead to new strategies for treating and predicting psychopathology.
