Dartmouth will enroll six Brown University students and one Boston University student for spring term 2011. Arrangements for the seven to study in Japan were disrupted following the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan on March 11. The academic calendars at their home institutions prevent them from joining spring semester courses which are already underway. Spring term classes at Dartmouth, which follows a quarter system, begin March 28.
Lindsay Whaley, Dartmouth’s associate dean for international and interdisciplinary studies, says “We are pleased to be able to assist this group of students under such unusual and unfortunate circumstances. Though it is disappointing that they cannot study in Japan, I expect that they will greatly enjoy being a part of the Dartmouth community this spring.” The students will be taking a variety of courses, including classes in Japanese language and literature.
