How Illuminating (The Economist)


Scientists have uncovered the biochemical mechanisms used by living organisms to produce light, known as bioluminescence—and are putting those tricks to a dazzling range of uses. Among the projects featured is work by Dartmouth Medical School Professor of Microbiology and Immunology David Leib. His work makes it possible to track the interactions of a virus with the immune system in real time.
