Director of Learning and Technology, Master of Health Care Delivery Science program
On the job: “The team behind the Master of Health Care Delivery Science (MHCDS) program is amazing,” says Kim, whose own day-to-day responsibilities include developing the technological infrastructure necessary to design and deliver hybrid online and on-campus courses. He’s also charged with ensuring that the working professional students in the MHCDS program receive an education designed specifically around their needs. Much research and testing lie behind the program’s pedagogy, he notes.
“Even though the MHCDS faculty will be teaching in a new, blended mode, the students’ learning experience has been designed from the ground up to be the equivalent in quality of any other Dartmouth degree.”

From sociology to technology: While teaching at West Virginia University, Kim, who holds a PhD from Brown, developed ways of capturing and sharing course lectures online, a venture that launched him into the growing discipline of learning technology. He’s been at Dartmouth since 2006, most recently as a senior learning technologist. Teaching at WVU and at Quinnipiac University—in classrooms and through distance learning—have given him hands-on experience and insight as an educator. “When it comes to using technology in the higher ed classroom, the question is, ‘How can we leverage tech to support faculty as they teach?’ It should always be about supporting learning and not about the tools,” Kim says.
Insider Opinion: Kim has written the near-daily Technology and Learning blog for the Inside Higher Ed website since August 2009. The blog, he says, is “a place for conversations to happen” about a rapidly evolving field. “It’s a great chance to think out loud and ask questions about how learning, technology, business, and academia cross paths.”
Beyond Dartmouth: Kim is married to Dartmouth pediatric oncologist Julie Kim, MD, PhD. They have two daughters, who are in 6th and 8th grades; they all ski and hike together. “Work/life balance is a constantly shifting thing,” says Kim, “and Hanover is a great community to make it happen.”
