Dartmouth Wind Symphony’s Concerts With Kids

Body

Dartmouth Wind Symphony (DWS), a 41-member wind ensemble of students and community members, is performing two concerts this month aimed at young listeners. The concerts feature symphonic works based on children’s melodies and on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, a story adored by young and old.

On Friday, May 6, at 8 p.m., the DWS performs the program for the public, presenting a concert titled Children at Play. Young musicians take the stage on Monday, May 16, at 10 a.m., when the ensemble performs a shortened version of the program. At that performance, the DWS plays alongside members of the Advanced Band of the Seminary Hill School (SHS) in Lebanon, N.H. The SHS musicians have been practicing the music since late March under the baton of SHS Music teacher Yvette Courtmanche. The May 16 concert, titled Musicians at Play, is part of the Hop’s School Matinee Series, with tickets available only to schools, teachers, and home-schooling parents.

The Valley News published an article on May 3, 2011, about the SHS musicians and the upcoming concerts. For more information on the programs, see the Hopkins Center website.
