In an annual ranking of creativity by Fast Company magazine, Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim is No. 9. The ranking counts down the 100 most influential and innovative executives, artists, and leaders shaping culture and the future of business.

The honorees comprise a wide range of important leaders, stretching from Asia to Africa, Europe to the Americas. “The variety of our honorees provides a larger lesson: Creativity is not formulaic,” says Robert Safian, editor of Fast Company.

Fast Company cites Kim’s work in health care in poor countries and the 2010 creation of Dartmouth’s Center for Health Care Delivery Science as reasons for his selection. “Already the go-to source for Medicare data, the College is now bringing together all of its academic resources, from medicine to business to systems engineering” to study how to improve health-care quality and lower costs, says the magazine.

Other top 10 honorees include: late night talk-show host and Dartmouth’s 2011 Commencement speaker Conan O’Brien (No. 8); Sebastian Thrun of Stanford University and Google, who is developing autopilot technology for safer cars (No. 5); and Arianna Huffington, whose Huffington Post is now the core content for AOL (No. 10).

Fast Company focuses on innovation in technology, ethical economics, leadership, and design. The print publication is read by 750,000 people and its website receives 4 million monthly visitors. The ranking can be found in the magazine’s June issue and online at FastCompany.com.
