Thirteen students and young alumni from Dartmouth have been awarded Fulbright, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) fellowships that will support their postgraduate studies in the coming year.
“All of the students and alumni who won awards this year have compelling and original ideas for research and teaching abroad and well formulated projects,” says Assistant Dean for Scholarship Advising Kristin O’Rourke. “They all worked very hard during the long application process, and their work and patience have paid off with these exciting opportunities to go abroad.”
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and provides funding for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools in over 155 countries worldwide.
DAAD is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. It offers programs and funding for American and Canadian students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education.
CASA, which is funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Education and guided by a consortium of 36 American colleges and universities, offers advanced level training in Arabic language and culture to qualified American students at its two locations at the American University in Cairo, Egypt and at the University of Damascus, Syria.
Dartmouth’s applicants for these scholarships were assisted in formulating their projects by O’Rourke, their faculty mentors, and by Institute for Writing and Rhetoric faculty Ellen Rockmore and Julie Kalish. Additionally, all applicants were interviewed by a faculty committee, the Committee on Graduate Fellowships, who completed a campus review as part of the application file.
Earlier this year, Blythe George ’12 became one of 20 college juniors nationwide to receive a 2011 Beinecke Scholarship and Christian Brandt ’12 was chosen as a 2011 Harry S. Truman Scholar. For more information on all these programs, see Dartmouth’s National Scholarships/Fellowships website.
